Frequently asked questions
A "Co-Op" or cooperative is a type of organization that is owned and operated by its members. These members can be individuals, businesses, or other entities who use the cooperative's services and share in its profits and decision-making processes. Cooperatives operate on the principles of democratic control, where each member typically has one vote regardless of their level of investment or usage of the cooperative's services.
We have over 200 community members who are member owners of the Co-Op. They've each purchased one share of the Co-Op and are given a vote to elect a Board of Directors. Our Board of Directors governs the Co-Op, developing its mission and vision and monitors its financial sustainability.
Our mission, at The County Co-Op, is about strengthening our community through agriculture and the local food economy. We're helping to sustain our strong local food network here in the Crown of Maine. We have over 50 different producers and consignment vendors and the majority of our produce, offered at peak season, is locally grown. We have a very strong network in Houlton, Maine and that's why we're here and love what we do.
